Of the works which Antonin Dvorak wrote during histhree-year sojourn in America, the StringQuartet in F major ("American") is the best known after the New WorldSymphony. It was writtenessentially without interruption during the course of June 1893 and reflectshappy times spentin the hamlet of Spillville over the summer holidays among Czech compatriots,descendantsof Czech immigrants, where the composer, surrounded by nature and friends, hadthe idealconditions for his composition work.
