Quipo-Quincunx for solo viola
Beschrijving
QUIPO was a device used among the ancient Peruvians for keeping accounts as well as recording important events. Smaller, multi-coloured knotted braids were attached to a thick cord. This colourful, albeit complicated mosaic, manifests itself in the musical variability of time signatures, as well as in the appearance of seemingly spontaneus, successive motifs. It is, however, worth remembering that the essence of 'quipo' was the binding together of all the elements by means of strong knots. QUINCUNX is an arrangement of five objects in a square, one at each corner and one in the middle. In musical terms this idea might be understood as the placing of sounds in space. But how is it possible to realize such an idea in the case of a single instrument? Luckily, compositional technique can be transmitted both in the very form of notation and in the planning of the seemingly one-part melodic line... [M. Moc] Compositions were written in response to a commision from the organisers of the 2nd Competition for Young Violists in Wroc?aw for compulsory pieces during auditions in 2005.
