Waiting (Tango)

Description

Each element of the title of this recent work is nicely represented. The tango elements are clearly there, although used with both subtlety and cleverness. lt is certainly a duo of equal partners - lovely chamber music writing with some moderate technical and musical challenges for both players. There is also very effective use of contrasting juxtaposed and simultaneous dynamics. The main title becomes clear after a few minutes. This piece is about waiting for the tango to start, sensing the mood, building the tension, occasional brusque gestures, regrouping, enjoying the possibilities of what is to come. This tango, Waiting, evokes the Latin-American style with special glissando and flautando effects and the enticing syncopated rhythms of this dance form. The initial mood is hushed and tender, leading to an impassioned section replete with flamboyant passagework and double stops before returning to the original muted atmosphere and graceful tempo.
