Opera potpourris were a common genre in the 19th century. It was a guaranteed way for the touring instrumental soloists to charm their audiences by riding on the successes of famous singers.
Here is the cello concerto that Verdi almost composed for the cellist friend, containing most of the famous arias from his opera Rigoletto, triumphantly premiered in Venice in 1851.
