Description

The word 'hemeron' in Greek means day, and hex stands for the number six. A hexameron, therefore, is a story told in six days. The Hexameron printed here requires only one evening, but what makes it special is the six great Romantic composers who devised it. Each of them wrote a variation on the march from the opera I Puritani by Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) which had had its premiere in Paris only two years previously - in the year of the composers death. Franz Liszt composed the introduction , the 2nd variation, interludes, and the finale. In addition to Liszt, Johann Peter Pixis, Henri Herz, Frederic Chopin, Sigismund Thalberg, and Carl Czerny composed one variation each. -- Saskia Bieber, Editor
