In seinen "Metamorphosen", uraufgeführt durch Viviane Hagner im März 2008 bei einem Berliner Festkonzert zum 80. Geburtstag des Komponisten, nur wenige Wochen vor seinem Tod, bezieht sich Frank Michael Beyer auf Skrjabins 6. Klaviersonate aus dem Jahr 1911 - ein Werk, dessen motivisch-thematische Durchdringung im Vorfeld der Reihentechnik Beyer seit seiner Studienzeit faszinierte. Die "Metamorphosen" beruhen auf einer bei Skrjabin vorgefundenen Tonskala, setzten aber da dem vielfach Rauschhaften des Klaviersatzes die Linearität der Solovioline entgegen. Die strenge Konstruktion wird vom freien Charakter der Musik kontrastiert, den Skrjabin selbst mit dem Attribut "volando - fliegend" beschrieben hat.
