Veel ervaring, theoretische uitleg en praktische toepassingen zijn systematisch en in een overzichtelijke structuur in dit boek bijeengebracht. Daarbij is ook gebruik gemaakt van wat schrijvers, schilders en musici over hun ontwikkeling hebben geschreven. In de meeste hoofdstukken zijn voorbeelden opgenomen van het op deze wijze werken met musici.
Het boek is daardoor bruikbaar als een soort checklist:
- Aan wat voor gedrag is een bepaalde achtergrond te herkennen?
- Wat kan ik daar wel en niet mee doen?
- Welke middelen staan musicus en docent daarvoor ter beschikking?
- Op welke punten kan mijn vertrouwde patroon worden aangevuld?
Bewuste en minder bewuste factoren worden hiermee toegankelijker voor de praktijk van het lesgeven en optreden. Het boek wordt met een aantal schematische samenvattingen van de behandelde onderwerpen afgesloten.
Dolf Grunwald was psycholoog, trainer en organisatie-adviseur, en werkzaam als docent psychologie aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Hij overleed in 2004.
