Muziek is iets waar we van kunnen genieten en waar we helemaal in kunnen opgaan. Misschien is het wel de kunst waar we ons van alle kunsten het meest in kunnen verliezen. Dat is een groot raadsel. Hoe komt het dat dit abstracte verschijnsel, bestaande uit pure klank, ons zo kan ontroeren en vervoeren?
In het Nederlandse taalgebied bestaan nauwelijks boeken waarin op een filosofische manier over muziek gesproken wordt. Dit boek voorziet in die leemte. Er zijn beschouwingen in gebundeld over centrale vragen uit de muziekfilosofie, zoals die sinds enkele decennia vooral in Engeland en Amerika is opgekomen. Geen hoogdravende metafysische beschouwingen maar toegankelijk geschreven opstellen over concrete vragen die door het verschijnsel muziek worden opgeroepen. Wanneer gaat klank over in muziek? Hoe luisteren we eigenlijk naar muziek en wat ervaren we dan? Wat is een muziekwerk voor een soort object, waarin verschilt het bijvoorbeeld van een schilderij? Blijft de Mattheüs-Passion nog wel de Mattheüs-Passion als je de oorspronkelijke tekst vervangt door een Nederlandse vertaling? Muziek wordt vaak als een taal beschouwd, maar gaat die vergelijking wel op? Welke 'taal' spreekt de muziek eigenlijk? Kan muziek iets meedelen of een verhaal vertellen? Of is muziek de taal der emoties, en wat bedoelen we daar dan eigenlijk mee? Hoe kan muziek, een verschijnsel dat bij uitstek geldt als tijdelijk en vluchtig, zo sterk een besef van tijdloosheid opwekken? En hoe verhouden muziek en stilte zich?
