Vind je ze niet mooi, Orfeo? Mevrouw Rozas klonk plots op
haar hoede.
Jawel ze zijn mooi, maar ik vroeg me gewoon af wie die liedjes
heeft geschreven.
Vrienden van mij, zei ze kortaf.
Muzikanten met wie ik vaak samenspeelde.
Maar ze zijn al jaren geleden gestorven.
Het spijt me, zei ik.
Waarom? Daar kun jij niets aan doen. Integendeel, jij speelt hun
muziek, en dat houdt ze nog een beetje levend, zei mevrouw Rozas
met een flauw lachje. Net zoals je mijn instrument levend
houdt.
De dromerige Orfeo beleeft een moeilijke tijd. Zijn vader is
weg, zijn moeder heeft verdriet, en op school wordt hij gepest. Hij
vlucht in zijn eigen wereld, waar geluid centraal staat. Geluiden
die hem raken, noteert hij in een boekje.
Op een dag ontmoet hij de oude mevrouw Rozas. De klank van haar
cello fascineert hem. Hij is dan ook verrukt als ze aanbiedt hem
celloles te geven.
Maar waarom speelt ze zelf nooit meer op het instrument? Waarom
praat ze niet graag over vroeger? Pas na haar dood ontrafelt Orfeo
het geheim van mevrouw Rozas en haar cello.
