Peter Graham componeerde Sirocco oorspronkelijk voor harmonieorkest op vraag van de Doncaster Concert Band en hun dirigent Karen Roberts. Zij speelden het werk voor het eerst in maart 2007 op het Hothouse Festival. Sirocco is een krachtige wind in de Sahara die beweegt boven de Middellandse Zee tussen Noord-Afrika en Zuid-Europa. Peter Graham nam deze streek als uitgangspunt voor een suite op mediterane volksliederen. De vlugge en levendige tarantella uit het eerste deel is een welbekend onderdeel van de Italiaanse bruiloftsfeesten. De romance uit het middendeel is een bekende Spaanse gitaarmelodie. De finale is gebaseerd op een mengeling van Griekse dansmuziek : langzame en snelle versies van de hasapiko. Deze sirtaki is bekend door zijn twijfelende openingsmaten en zijn opwindende antwoord in het gehele orkest : net zoals een wervelende muzikale sirocco.
