Charles Camilleri, in 1931 op Malta geboren, geniet vandaag erkenning als een van de meest persoonlijke componisten van deze tijd. In zijn muzikale carriëre evolueerde hij van eenvoudige diatonische en modale volkse melodieën naar complex rijper werk met communicatieve kwaliteiten. In zijn composities maakt Camilleri uitvoerig gebruik van twee originele concepten: de atomisering van het metrum en het gebruik van chaotische patronen. Beide technieken kunnen worden omschreven als genoteerde structuren voor improvisatie.
Camilleri, die al bijna 300 werken componeerde, heeft zijn muziek de afgelopen jaren beschreven als minder modern, maar meer eigentijds. Aan de basis ervan ligt de overtuiging dat alles één is. Het primitieve element van het volkslied wordt vermengd met avant-garde-elementen: Het verleden inspireert het heden voor de toekomst.
De geometrische vorm van mijn muziek, zegt Camilleri, is een oneindige ruimte waarin de structuur meer bepalend is dan de inhoud.
